How to Help a Parent Move to Assisted Living: A Family Checklist
By the Round Rock Affordable Movers crew · November 3, 2026 · 6 min read
Start 4–6 weeks out: get the room's measurements and move-in rules from the community, choose the furniture that fits (bed, favorite chair, dresser), decide what goes to family, storage, or donation, and book movers who can set up the room before your parent arrives. Most single-room moves are on the smaller side, and seniors get a discount with us. Call or text 512-590-4119 to get it.
Start with a conversation, not a moving box
For most families, the hardest part isn't the furniture. It's the change. Let your parent lead where they can: which chair comes along, which photos go on the wall, what the new room should feel like. Small choices help a big move feel like their own.
If brothers, sisters, or other relatives are involved, pick one person to be the main contact for the community and the movers. It keeps details from getting lost.
A simple 6-week timeline
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 6 weeks out | Get the room's measurements, a floor plan, and the community's move-in rules (move-in hours, elevator or loading-area reservations) |
| 4–5 weeks out | Choose the furniture that fits; decide what goes to family, storage, donation, or junk removal |
| 3 weeks out | Book your movers and confirm the move-in date and time with the community |
| 2 weeks out | Start packing the things that aren't used every day; label boxes by room |
| Last week | Pack a first-night bag; confirm the elevator reservation and parking |
| Move day | Movers set up the bed and furniture first, then your family adds the personal touches |
Every community is different. Always check their rules before you book a date.
What to bring to assisted living
Less is more. Rooms are smaller than most homes, and a room that isn't crowded is easier and safer to move around in. Bring the pieces that feel like home and leave the rest for family or storage.
- ✓Their own bed (if it fits) or bedding they love, plus a favorite chair
- ✓A dresser or small chest, a nightstand, and a lamp
- ✓Family photos, a clock with large numbers, and a few favorite decorations
- ✓Comfortable clothes and shoes, labeled with their name
- ✓Medications, glasses, hearing aids, chargers, and important papers in a first-night bag
Make the room feel like home on day one
Try to set up the room before your parent arrives, or while a family member takes them to lunch. Walking into a finished room with their own bed made, their chair by the window, and photos on the dresser makes the first day much easier.
Our crew takes apart and puts back together beds and furniture, and places each piece where you want it. We work around the community's move-in times and elevator rules, and we're patient and respectful around residents and staff.
What about everything else in the house?
Most senior living moves are really several moves in one: a few pieces to the new room, some to family members, some to a storage unit, and some to donation or the dump. We can handle multiple stops in the same day when it fits, and we also offer junk removal for what's left.
How much does an assisted living move cost?
We use simple hourly pricing: from $100 per hour for 2 movers on easy moves, most moves $120–$150 per hour, with a 2-hour minimum, plus a $100–$150 truck fee only if the move needs our moving truck. Single-room moves are usually on the smaller side.
Seniors get a discount with us. Call or text 512-590-4119, mention it, and we'll apply it to your quote (valid ID required). Family members can call for a parent, even from out of town.
